Jimmy’s Pharm Facts : Has anyone ever heard of a Victory Garden?

Jimmy CroppedIt’s usually around this time of year that growing a “Victory Garden” comes to mind.  When I was young, my grandmother, Gram, would always tell the story of the “Victory Gardens” that popped up during World War II.  They were in part, a symbol of patriotism and another part necessity.  This was during the time of rationing and “Rosie the Riveter” when everyone pulled together and sacrificed to do what they had to for love of country and again, necessity.  Gram would say that the garden was a way to help the war effort.  Gram would plant vegetables in the flower beds and along her rock fence.  She planted pecan trees that are actually still producing the fruit of her labor from many years passed.

Through the years gardeners have continued to grow these types of gardens.  The name has changed….  We now have raised bed gardens, patio gardens, planters etc…etc…  There are gardens made from cement blocks, sandboxes, cross ties or even wood pallets.  The possibilities are endless.  There is only one thing missing!  THE VICTORY!
So, let’s put the “Victory” back in our gardens!  “Victory” may be honoring a soldier you know, or maybe a way to bless your neighbor. It could be a time well spent with grandchildren or the beginning of a new healthy lifestyle.  For some of you, whose thumbs have lost the hue of green, or for those of you, who never had it, don’t fret, you too can have “Victory”!  It can be found at our local farmer’s market or roadside produce stand!

Speaking of farmer’s markets, the NEW city of Lindale Farmer’s Market should be up and running by May this year.  For more information, please click here.
